Horchow Fire Pit, c. 1870

Also known as a brasero, this fire pit consists of a copper basin sitting in a zinc-covered wooden base. The edge of the hammered copper basin wraps around an iron rim for support. Brass plates riveted to the sides of the basin hold ornate brass handles. Though the basin can be removed from the base, the bottom of the basin is not flat, so it cannot be used by itself. The metal surface of the base is embellished with copper studs arranged in two distinct patterns. Though several are missing, copper studs also encircle the inner and outer rims. The base originally stood on eight feet; one is missing. Brasero shows wear appropriate to age and normal use. Removable basin, 19.75"Dia. x 5.25"T. Overall, 38"Dia. x 7"T. From Spain.
